A lot happened in the middle ages.

At the beginning of the middle ages, Western Europe was in a shambles, with wave after wave of Germanic tribes dismembering the old Roman Empire of the West. These Germanic tribes gave rise to kingdoms that looked back to Roman Law and Order with some interest once they regarded their land as their own possession and began to want to improve it. The result was a rise of centralized government, which was feudal in nature, but which had a vested interest in prosperity.

Charlemagne lead the Franks into a period of rising literacy, importing the best teachers into his court. Alfred the Great of England did the same, going a step further and making sure education was to be done in English. He had great books translated for the purpose and said he wanted all free men of England taught to read if it was possible to do so.

Schools were opening in the most surprising places and times. The first primary school was opened in the fifth century, several church schools in England date from the seventh and eighth centuries, a state run secular school, the Beverley Grammar School, was opened in Northumbria in 700 AD (now in Yorkshire). By the end of the Viking Age, there were schools opened in Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden (I was astonished to find this out).

The first universities opened in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and there were more than seventy opened during the middle ages, altogether.

There were a lot of inventions in the middle ages. The introduction of the horse collar made agriculture so much more efficient that the population of Europe at the end of the middle ages was greater than it had been during the height of the Roman empire. Stirrups, new looms, rag content paper, gunpowder, canons, the printing press, and movable type were all products of the middle ages.

Feudalism, which was characteristic of the middle ages, gradually gave way during the period. By the end of the middle ages it was pretty much gone in Scotland, England and Wales.

At the same time, the banking system rose in the middle ages, first influenced by the Knights Templar, and, when they were destroyed, it was taken over by such groups of people as the powerful Medici family, which was mercantile.

And in northern Europe, the Hansas formed the Hanseatic League, a mercantile organization that rivaled nations for power and had its own navy.

Art and architecture began to rise during the Early Middle Ages, and brought the about the Gothic period, with its stained glass and lofty cathedrals. This, in turn, gave way to new styles of art that presaged the Renaissance.

Wow! The question stuns me.

The list is long. In fact it is too long to give credit to everyone and everything deserving.

Have you heard of Beowulf? The Hagia Sophia? Dante? Chaucer? Castles, Counterpoint? Byzantine icons? Gothic architecture? Troubadours? Fiddles? Universities? The scientific method?

There is a link to a related question below. I gave a sort of a wise crack as an answer, but provided some links that a person could look at to see the scope of medieval culture. Try taking a look, if you are interested. And if you do, bear one thing in mind, all the links go to generalized articles on things that involved many people doing many things - not a single one deals with a specific person or work.

Does the age of exploration count as the middle ages?

The Age of Exploration was mostly or entirely after the Middle Ages. The two can be regarded as overlapping to some extent, though some people might use dates for the Middle Ages that would have the time not overlap with the Age of Exploration at all. The date used for the beginning of the Age of Discovery is usually 1418, when the Portuguese began to map the coasts they came to. The age lasted until the early 17th century. Different historians use different dates for the Middle Ages. The most common date is probably 1453, but people in different countries tend to use different dates. English people are likely to use 1485, Italians often use 1401, Spanish people are likely to use 1516, and the date of Columbus' first voyage, 1492, is used by many people. So a person might hold the view that the first 90 years out of the two hundred or more of the Age of Exploration were part of the Middle Ages. Or the person might decide that the Age of Exploration started a few years after the Middle Ages ended.

In the US when did the Middle Ages start?

The Middle Ages were a time in Europe after the Fall of Rome and lasting about 1000 years. Why was Sweet tea important in the middle ages?

Tea as we know it (the leaves of the Camelia Sinensis) was not known in the West in the Middle Ages. In Europe and Britain they did make many soothing potions, sometimes called tisanes, from local herbs and leaves, some of which may have been sweetened, chiefly with honey, because sugar was not much used in Europe at that time.
