Note that Vermont (shown as part of New York) actually declared itself an independent republic in 1777, before becoming a state in 1791. Maine was split from Massachusetts and became a state in 1820. The western regions of Virginia and North Carolina became Kentucky and Tennessee, and in 1863, West Virginia split from Virginia.
