Nowerdays it extensively cultivated in many tropical regions and currently Vietnam is the world's largest producer and exporter of pepper.

Most of it comes from India. It originally came from Malabar, on the West Coast of South India. Pepper plantations can now be found in Vietnam, Thailand, China and Sri Lanka as well as India.
