As of the 2013 United Nations Development Report Gender Inequality Index ratings, the most gender-equal country (and thus politically gender-equal) is Slovenia, with a value of 0.021 GII. It is followed by Switzerland (0.030), Germany(0.046), Sweden (0.054), Denmark (0.056), and Austria (0.056). Other countries which have had female heads of government or heads of state, and thus significant political gender equality, include the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, Argentina, Liberia, Ukraine, France, Israel, and Turkey.

The Nordic countries take first place on any list.

Political equality refers to each persons individual rights and liberties. It is the right to identical voting rights and equitable treatment under the law. Each citizen is an equal participant regardless of wealth, social status or gender. Every citizen has value.

The World Economic Forum sponsors the Global Gender Gap Index. The Index benchmarks national gender gaps on several areas that constitute a countrys all-over rating on gender equality: economic, political, education and health criteria. The various sub-sets of statistics provide country rankings that allow for effective comparisons across regions and income groups.

It should be noted that examples of female heads of state do not indicate political equality for all women in that state. There is a wide gulf between women who have had positions of power in South Asian countries and ordinary women. A good example is Indira Ghandi, the Prime Minister of India from 1966-1984. The majority of women in India had no power then and no have no power now.

The top ten countries that have achieved highest grades for gender equality are:

  1. Iceland
  2. Finland
  3. Norway
  4. Sweden
  5. Denmark
  6. Nicaragua
  7. Rwanda
  8. Ireland
  9. Philippines
  10. Belgium
