A famous modern and ancient sporting event are the Greek Olympics. Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympic Games in 1921. The Olympic flag and flame are some of the most important pieces of the games. The flag has 5 circles each one was colored either blue, black, red, yellow or green. Each flag in the world has at least 1 of the colors on the Olympic flag. The Olympic flame is lit in a torch at the beginning of the games in Olympia by the sun and is then passed from runner to runner until it reaches the stadium in the hosting city. The torch then lights a gigantic bowl in the stadium. The flame is ignited at the conclusion of the games. The flame represents purity and striving for perfection. It also shows the connection between the ancient and modern games. There were no wars during the games and everyone was everyone's alli. Women could only compete in the chariot race for anyone competing in the games did not wear any type of clothing or covering. The Olympic games are still continuous and they will be for many years to come.

Greeks, especially the Athenians, were experts in the arts category. One of their structural achievements was the columns. There are 3 types: Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian. The Ionic column has a swirl design. This design column can be found on the Jefferson Memorial and also the temple for Athena in Athens. The Doric column is a basic more squarish design. Doric columns were used on the Parthenon building which was built by Pericles. The other example is the Corinthian column which can be found on the Charlotte City Hall building in North Carolina. The Corinthian column is more decorative and it usually has floral patterns on it. All 3 of these columns have ridges along the shaft (middle section of the column). You can find these columns under arches and in the front of some modern houses. These columns weren't just for decoration they were also for sturdiness. In Greece their roofs were made of marble, a very heavy material for a roof. This structure was very smart for the ancient times.

I could go on for hours about how amazing each accomplishment of the Greeks was. These are just 3 of the ancient genius discoveries the Greeks have contributed. You might not realize it but the United States of America is a relatively new country. Most everything you see is a borrowed idea from a different civilization. Everywhere you look there are many, many achievements from many, many cultures. The columns, Olympic Games and democracy are 3 of them which in their own small ways have made this country what it is today. Greece is a very big part of American heritage.
