There are 8 main resons why people migrate to Australia:
1. The Australian Health System maintains standards of excellence. In fact, Health Care is provided through Medicare free public facilities.
2. Think bright blue skies and sunshine. Aussie weather is wonderful all round. You'll be drenched in sunshine all the way from Victoria, SA, NSW and WA to the subtropical and tropical and tropical Queensland, WA and NT states. There's no escaping the great weather!
3. Australia is a multicultural society. Although, English is the official language, many other languages are spoken in Australia too.
4. Most Australians follow Christianity. However, other faiths such as Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism are widely practiced too.
5. The crime rate is lower than most. We should have the right to live in a safe society. Australia's crime rates are lower than other western nations.
6. The country doesn't have a class or Caste System.
7. The standard of education in Australia is high. Australian Universities are amongst the best in the world.
8. Australia is a country which isn't overcrowed, and has a lot of space and nature, more than most other countries.
Most free settlers were from countries like Scotland, England, Ireland or Europe.
People in Scotland and England who had decided to sail to Australia were small farmers who had lost their land because the farming methods have changed so they ended up having no jobs, or a home to go to. Another reason why the English people left their country was because the cities were over crowded and dirty also it was hard to find a decent house or work. In Ireland most people left due to the lack of land and during the 1840's a serious famine came over the Irish.

There were free settlers on the First Fleet. They were the officers' wives and children. With each successive fleet, more free settlers came out with officers or marines. The Second Fleet arrived in New South Wales in June 1790. Actual free settlement in Australia only began in 1793. The first group of completely free settlers in New South Wales, not attached to officers or marines, arrived on 16 January 1793. The ship 'Bellona' carried five men, two women and six children.
SA was created by the South Australia Colonisation Act 1834, the act establishes SA as a colony of free settlers and further forbids the transport of convicts to SA.
