Why does the antenna on a 1999 Montero Sport make a grinding noise for about ten seconds when it goes up?

There's a plastic cable with teeth inside your antenna. A gear in the antenna base engages this "cable" and pushes/pulls the antenna. Sounds like either the gear or cable has some broken teeth.
