We can treat wastewater by biological process or by chemical process or by configuring both depending upon the specific cases. In biological process, wastewater purely domestic in origin is generally treated by utilising Natural Resources like sunlight, air/oxygen, temperature, wind, earth, etc. and microorganisms present in water/wastewater. Whereas in chemical process, various chemicals are used for wastewater treatment depending upon the types and amount of chemical pollutants in the wastewater and the required treated effluent standards. Where both domestic and industrial wastewater are to be treated, both the above processes are configured for achieving the desired results.

There are 3 sections involved in the process. The first is primary where the people use a grate to remove the solid compounds in the sewage. This is than allowed to settle in a large grit chamber. After that the sewage is sent to a sedimentation tank where the suspended rocks are removed. Then comes the secondary part, here the sewage is put in an aeration tank and the organic compounds are removed. The resulting sludge is incinerated or used as compost. Then chemicals are added and finally it is put in an artificial marsh or lagoon and a careful choice of plants such as the hyacinth plant can be used to remove some of the heavy metals. After this it is sent into a stream or a river.
