Sounds like you need a new battery.
It depends if the starter is turning the engine over and its not starting the problem is not with the starter its with your ignition or fuel system most likely, If your start is making a whirring sound then its not making contact with the flywheel and you probably need a new starter
Check to see if power is getting to the starter. If it is not check the solenoid contacts in it may be burned and not letting the power threw . If power is making it to the starter it maybe your brushes are in need of replacement or (dirt in starter ,broken magnets ,bearings or burnt wires).
starter relay , up of the battery , open ignition on , place car on park and jump it.
check for a full 12 volts at the batery and then at the starter. then check fuses then the starter its self and the last thing check the ignition switch
If a 1999 Mazda Protege keeps making clicking noises, you might have a bad alternator or starter. You could also have a bad ignition or solenoid.
The starter should only be making noise if you attempt to start the car and the starter is going bad. It is possible that the remote starter is bypassing the mechanical starter. Starters are very easy to replace. Be sure to disconnect the car battery before doing so.
Depending On which solenoid if it is a starter solenoid there is one on the inner fender and one on the starter the one on the inner fender is changed by disconnecting the battery then removing the wires making sure to know where they go when you put the new one on then unbolt it and bolt the new one in the same way in reverse if it is the one on the starter however your best bet is to replace the starter completely it is more ecconomical in the long term of your vehicle Depending On which solenoid if it is a starter solenoid there is one on the inner fender and one on the starter the one on the inner fender is changed by disconnecting the battery then removing the wires making sure to know where they go when you put the new one on then unbolt it and bolt the new one in the same way in reverse if it is the one on the starter however your best bet is to replace the starter completely it is more ecconomical in the long term of your vehicle
The problem could either be a stuck starter solenoid or a bad ignition switch. He's right, I would lean toward the ignition switch first, but I once had a bobcat that had the contacts in the solenoid fuse together and keep running. I think it was because of a lot of continuous cranking making them really hot.
If this is an automatic transmission, it might be the shifter interlock that only allows the starter to work when in Park or Neutral. If the switch built into the shifter isn't making proper contact, it won't turn over. If the contacts are loose, you can try pushing the shift lever to the right to see if you can force contact. This worked for me until I rebuilt the switch. Well it could be a few things, Is your battery still good? Did you blow the starter fuse and there should be a starter relay as well. Good luck
Damaged ignition switch which keeps power constantly to the start circuitFaulty starter relay which keeps the contact closedShort in the starter solenoid keeping the circuit closedPositive and negative wires making contact at the solenoidThose are all possible reasons
Start by removing the negative battery cable from battery. Next get under truck on passager side and disconnect the wires from the starter solenoid, making sure you mark wires to the correct terminals. Then remove the two mounting bolts and lift out starter and solenoid together. Install new one in reverse order. It is easier to get to the starter thru the gap behind the passenger tire in the wheel well.
the starter is bad.
