Sounds like no coolant flow to me.
Check for missing water pump belt or stuck thermostat, but not as likely as:
Most likely is cracked or dislodged water pump impeller. Replace the water pump.
How old / what is the condition of the engine coolant-anti-freeze?If it is at all suspect, have the system thoroughly flushed.I would be suspicious of the water pump myself.Review the "Related Question" below all about diagnosing overheating problems. Lots of great information...
"Inside the overflow tank. you get to buy a whole new tank." The switch inside the overflow tank is the coolant level switch. The engine coolant temperature sensor is located on the driver side of the engine near the rear of the engine compartment. by theramonast
Its inside the coolant overflow tank/reservoir (its the plastic reservoir where you pour in your coolant). Look on the side (the side that faces the engine) and you'll see an electrical wire is connected by a harness. That's your coolant level sensor.
The Ford Taurus is famous for having leaking heater core. It is located on the passenger side inside the passenger compartment and inside the dashboard. It costs about $1000 to get a mechanic to fix it.
Engine coolant temperature is cooled by the radiator, moved by a water pump and controlled by a thermostat. If there are troubles with any of those components the coolant will boil Also if the head gasket goes bad gasses from combustion inside the engine will get into the coolant and cause it to boil.
Remove all the connections going to the ECM carefully. Remove the 3 bolts that hold the ECM in, remove the ECM. Take the coolant overflow tank out. There is a stud that held the coolant overflow bottle in at the back, remove this by prying it from inside the wheel well. The fan will come out easy after all this is removed.
1) Leaking fluids inside the car 2) heavy steam build-up - and/or smell of anti-freeze inside the car. See "Related Questions" below for much much more about Taurus heating & cooling problems - and fixes.
the light is triggered by a switch inside the overflow bottle, If the coolant level is low when the engine is cold, it will trigger the switch to turn on the light until the cooant warms up and expands. The hot water expands and flows through the radiator cap and into the overflow bottle and shuts the light off. Then once the engine is shut off and cools down, the coolant will flow back into the engine again and empty the overflow bottle. so if the light is on, you need to fill the overflow bottle to the "cold" mark.
A gas tank can indeed overflow if it is not full. A gas tank can overflow if the pressure inside of it is too high.
If it is not actually over heating, then if the smell is outside the car, look for coolant leaks around the head and the thermostat cover. Inside the car could be a leaking heater coil.
One on passenger side by the coolant overflow tank. A strut style mount on the bottom passenger side next to wheelwell. A transmission mount is located inside the wheelwell on the drivers side.
Sounds like "heater core" is shot-any coolant leaks inside the car coming from under the dash?, Have check, replaced. Or could just be an air lock in coolant system, which is better easy fix.
