A 1994 Buick century seems to be stuck in a low gear and will not shift automatically what could cause this?

Just had a 95 Buick Century get stuck in first and found out a small screen melted and fell into the converter, naturally locking it up. The cause was the engine overheated and my daughter seemed to forgot to tell me this situation.
Answersome automatic transmissions have a vacuum assist valve attached with a rubber hose running to it. look for one and make sure rubber hose isn't rotted, split, or just popped off, may be the problemWiki User
