There was a lot of initial resentment against Vietnamese refugees settling in the U.S., because few spoke English and their culture was so different from ours. In some areas, these immigrants have melded with the local populace and in other areas they continue to maintaim enclaves of their own culture. Many Vietnamese have thrived in the bayou areas and low country of Louisiana because the climate, soil and Natural Resources are so similar to their home country and they've been able to establish successful farms.

With few exceptions, US Army personnel returned home on civilian airliners as individuals. There were NO parades or Marching Bands of soldiers. Unless US Marines were aboard US Naval ships, they returned the same way. US Air Force personnel, US Navy, and US Coast Guardsmen, normally returned to the United States with their ship or aircraft. US Navy ships and US Air Force aircraft would often have a military band playing welcoming music (for the navy it was "anchors away") as the warship prepared for docking, or the aircraft was landing. These two areas were normally on a military/naval base, and the waiting people were always wives, family, relatives, and friends. Protesters were NOT allowed on the military/naval bases. The returning individual GI's (army and marines) landing at the civilian International Airports were at the mercy of the public.

Are Vietnamese people really just Chinese people that migrated to Vietnam?

Well not really because vietnamese people use letters/words like "cái nhà" which means house, and Chinese use characters like "房子" meaning house in Chinese. Also over a thousand years ago there was a war of China against Vietnam and China won. Even though Chinese migrated to Vietnam. but the Chinese they will attack Chinese vietnamese. if the Chinese vietname did not obey their willing. Don't call Vietnamese people are Chinese. Vietnamese people is from Yue clans. A lot people thought we're from China because the Han wages war and invaded our land, and we were pushed to the south. Our original land was in somewhere near Guan Xi. The 1st wave of Han came to Yue Nan was Zhou Tuo as we were under 1 kingdom named Nan Yue. ( same as Qin dynasty, a lot of kingdoms were under Qing Shi Huang Di control ) You can't explain it that way for languages. For example we have the same words for gia đình (家庭 - jiā tíng) with almost the same pronunciation for family.

How does the Vietnam war relate to world war two?

Primarily that the Vietnam War was fought by WWII commanders (WWII veterans); their last war. In WWII, Japan took over a lot of Asian countries that were colonized by European counties. Vietnam was colonized by France. After the war, the French came back and they thought that it would be like it was before the war. The Vietnamese people realized that the French were vulnerable, having been beaten by the Japanese. If the Japanese could defeat the French in Vietnam, then so could the Vietnamese people.

Who originally lived in Vietnam?

The Vietnamese people weren't originally the people who lived in roughly the area known as Vietnam today. Two groups, who had influence all over Asia from China to Indonesia, were the Bac Son (Bei Shan) and the Dong Son (Tong Shan) people. They are believed to be the earliest people that in this region. Their survival as a civilisation became threatened by groups from China settling down in the area. These people were known as the Bai Yue (or, simply, 'Hundred Viet'), or more specifically the "Luo Yue/Lac Viet" who became the majority group of Northern Vietnam. Another S.Chinese group began settling in Vietnam, these people were called the "Ou Yue/Au Viet". Not much is known about the people who originally occupied what is now known as Vietnam, but some believe their descendants are known as the Cham. The Cham are a very small minority group that live in isolated parts of Vietnam. They are extremely different from the modern Vietnamese who came from Southern China.

What event led to a united Vietnam?

The North Vietnamese Government tried to unite the country, but South Vietnam resisted. When North Vietnam sent combat troops and propagation 'cadre' into the South to persuade them to surrender, the U.S. and other allies came into the country to defend the South against Communism. Because of popular sentiment against the war, the U.S. withdrew all troops by April, 1973 - leaving the South Vietnamese Army to fight for themselves. Within two years, Saigon (the South Vietnam capital) fell to Communist North Vietnamese forces, and the country was unified, making HaNoi in North Vietnam the nation's capital.

When did Vietnam become independent from its colonists?

It depends on how you read the question. There are three possible dates:2 September 1945 -- This is when the Viet Minh (the forerunners of the Vietnamese government) declared independence from France. However, the Vietnamese people were still under French control. (You can compare this to 4 July 1776 for the United States in that the Americans were still under British occupation when the Declaration of Independence was issued.)1 August 1954 -- This is the date when the French surrendered at the end of the First Indochina War and allowed North Vietnam to become an independent country. However, South Vietnam came under strong US sponsorship and quasi-occupation. Vietnamese today (and North Vietnamese at the time) characterize the South Vietnamese government as a US colonial government. Americans argue that it was simply a close relationship, like the US currently enjoys with Israel or South Korea. Regardless while this was the first establishment of Vietnamese sovereignty since the establishment2 July 1976 -- This was the date when South Vietnam was reunified with North Vietnam and is the date when all of Vietnam (ruled by the former North Vietnamese government) expelled foreign influences.
