Revenue Canada is much less threatening than the IRS, but you owe the money! Ask the Payroll Department to take off a little more on Income Tax so you won't end up owing at the end of the year. They will calculate it out for you and take that amount off each pay cheque. If you should get a refund, they can withhold it. If you should get the GST rebate cheques every three months, they can withhold those. For small amounts, they won't do much more, but for larger amounts, they can seize assets, freeze bank accounts, etc. They can also report the non-payment to the credit bureaus, which lowers your credit scores.
It is to your best interest to pay, because they add a penalty to the owed amount, plus interest and it adds up fast. Phone Canada Revenue and discuss a payment plan that suits what you bring in salary wise. They want their money and are willing to work with you. Get a better attitude about it or they can get nasty.
Remember that when you get EI or any pay cheque, they are deducting as if that is your only income for the year. This happens if you change jobs too. If you are worried, you can have them withhold more or keep some in savings. For more information please go on the link below:
