The lighter skin aided vitamin D formation and was an evolutionary survival benefit. Prior to that time people are generally thought to be more heavily pigmented. The impact of the inter species between white humans and non human Neanderthals may have led to other genetic changes affecting the eyes (blue eye coloration) and hair (red hair)

No, both black and white people share a common African ancestry. As populations migrated and evolved, variations in skin color occurred due to adaptation to different climates and environments over time. Biological diversity among humans exists due to a variety of factors, not because one group originated from another.

Sure, it'll sunburn easier, but if you're well away from the equator sunlight generally isn't as intense.
So as years passed and humans spread north natural selection favored those who traded in the sun protection they didn't need for more vitamin D production they did need.

As they moved to other parts of the world where the weather was cooler, their skins adapted and so around the world today we have people with different skin colours which usually are darker where it is hotter and lighter where it is cooler.
