The Chinese have had most of their land taken by Ghengis Khan's army of mongols during the height of the mongol empire (the main reason why the great wall was built.) But the Chinese recovered from the Calvary/archer attacks they'd put on villages, burning them down one by one. But don't forget, this once isolated band of competing tribes, clans, and warlords were brought together under a single banner. Teamwork does pay off in the end as they say! Kublai Khan founded the empire, and they spread to take over the middle east, eastern Europe, most of central and southern Asia, and even reaching into India and Egypt, becoming the world's largest empire. Not bad for a bunch of marauding mongols! So China had to face a great menace. They were fortunate that they recovered.
Exterior of their borders, no. China (todays Communist China & and not Taiwan, Nationalist China) has traditionally been a "business" nation. That is to say, a country of manufacturing of goods and world trade. War was never their area of interest. But self defense was always on their minds from the likes of Barbarians such as the Mongol Hordes, and later the Japanese (on at least two occassions); which is one of the reasons they built their "Great Wall."
Ancient mariners in Europe and later in North America consistently tried to find a quicker route to China...to forego shipping costs in their trade with China. One of Columbus's objective was finding a quick passage to China (and India, both being bordering countries). The "Silk Road" was a land passage from China transiting thru the Middle East (more properly known as Southwest Asia and Asia Minor). Marco Polo may have travelled some of those routes during his visits to China.
