Most of Martin Luther's problems with the Catholic Church were personal. The Catholic Church, as the only authorized representative of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, has always preached honesty, integrity, abstinence, sobriety, and personal responsibility before the Lord. Catholics believe that Martin Luther disagree with all of these things. They say that being unable to live up to them, he attacked the Church in other ways. He re-translated the Bible throwing out seven books from the Old Testament and putting in words in the New Testament to make a "Bible" that agreed with his personal philosophy. In attacking the Church, he started by posting 95 Theses, a copy of which is attached below.

Catholic AnswerDefy means to "openly resist or refuse to obey" which is what M.Luther did, in spades. He refused to obey his solemn vows. He refused to obey his religious superiors. He refused to obey his Bishop. His refused to obey God's Holy Church, which was established by Our Blessed Lord, and led by the Holy Spirit. He refused to believe that God, in the person of His Son, Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, would fulfill His promises of being with His Church until the end of time. He thus refused to obey God, and defied God. He left the Church and threw away his salvation with both hands.

Martin Luther basically challenged the Church by saying that he alone knew better and that if they didn't like it they should just go away and not bother him. When told that he couldn't just stick words into the text of Scripture as he famously did in Romans inserting the word "alone" after "We hold that a man is justified without works of the law by faith alone." When Emser called him on this, he replied in writing:"If your Papist annoys you with the word [alone], tell him straightway: Dr. Martin Luther will have it so: Papist and ass are one and the same thing. Whoever will not have my translation, let him give it the go-by: the devil's thanks to him who censures it without my will and knowledge. Luther will have it so, and he is a doctor above all the doctors in Popedom." (Amic. Discussion, 1, 127)

Thus we see that Martin Luther challenged the authority of the Pope with HIS OWN authority and conceit, we would not contend that M. Luther was any kind of Christian humble.

Who created the Lutheran church?

His followers. I have been raised Lutheran and I have learned that Martin Luther's original intentions were not at all to break with the Catholic church, he in fact encouraged his followers not to break from the church, he just wanted to change the corruptness of it and focus more on the Bible. The way I understand it to be is that Martin Luther's followers (not Martin Luther, it was after his death) broke from the Catholic church because they recognized the strength of the church itself and were insulted by the fact that the Catholic church excommunicated Luther.

Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic Church due to his Ninety-Five Theses, which he posted on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517.
