The Missouri Compromise of 1850 can be said to aid the South in that once again, the South had the idea that its view on slavery was correct. By compromising, the Federal government once again set forth "rules" to keep the balance of free and slave states equal.

The Southerners received the fugitive slave law which required all U.S. citizens to return all run away slaves. Also, DC was still a slave state but slave trade was now prohibited. Also, The Territory of New Mexico was organized without any certain prohibition of slavery.

How did Stephen Douglas plan to undo the Missouri compromise?

Stephen Douglas was eager to develop west of his home from Illionois. As a result, he suggested to form two new territories : Kansas and Nebraska. However, many Southerners rejected the idea because under the Missouri Compromise, the territories would be admitted as free states. Douglas then proposed that the upcoming territories would be decided by popular sovereignty, earning the South's favor and thus, removing the Missouri Compromise.

Did the north like popular sovereignty?

No most northerners did not like popular sovereignty because it violated the Missouri compromise. The South was in favor of popular sovereignty because it allowed the people to decide if slavery would be allowed in a new territory.

Why did the crisis over the Missouri compromise expose?

The crisis over Missouri Compromise exposed the divisions of the country on the contentious issue of slavery. The line that literally divided the territories that would become states put the Union into a precarious balance that could easily tip in favor of the slave states.

What two states were admitted to the union as part of the Missouri compermize?

They were admitted as part of the "Missouri Compromise". Missouri wanted to be a state, but Missouri allowed slavery. Allowing another slave state into the Union would've tipped the delicate balance in Congress in favor of the slave states. So Maine, which was part of Massachusetts at the time, was separated off and made into a new Free State (that is, a non-slavery state) to balance against Missouri, which was allowed to finally become a state.

Why did the democrats praise the legislative compromises of the early 1850s?

Not only the Democrats, but all parties to the Missouri Compromises were in favor of the two compromises. Of course there is always a group of people who opposed them. The two compromises were in 1820 and 1850. The purposes of the compromises was to keep the number of free states and slave states equal. The 1820 Missouri Compromise was the work of Henry Clay was the Senator that helped make the Compromise a reality. This compromise worked. Later in 1850, when national figure, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, put through the second Missouri Compromise. He was a prominent national Democrat.

Why did Abraham Lincoln not favor the unconditional repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act?

Abraham Lincoln did not favor the unconditional repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act because like Stephen A. Douglas and Daniel Webster, felt that it was part of the deal involved in the 1850 Missouri Compromise.

Why did Missouri's request to join the Union increase sectionalism?

Missouri had far fewer slaves than its Southern neighbors, less than 10% of the population. So it normally would have become a "free state" where slaveholding would not have been permitted. Along with statehood for Maine, this would have swung the balance in Congress in favor of the anti-slavery wing. So, under the Missouri Compromise (1820), Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri as a slave (allowing) state. This, however, did not produce a pro-slavery government there, increasing tensions between the North and South. The Compromise was effectively repealed in 1854 by the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

How was the Bill of Rights a compromise?

Federalists were in favor of the Constitution but anti-federalists were not because they were in fear of losing their rights. Congress included the Bill of Rights as a compromise to satisfy both parties. The compromise is commonly called the "Massachusetts Compromise"

What was the first three-fifths compromise?

It was about slaves. 3 out of 5 slaves were taxed (which was in the North's favor), So, the South would have to pay more taxes. For the South's benefit, three out of five slaves would be represented in congress, which means more seats for them.
