its a little of both. From the bottom you can reach the wires and the bolts just get someone to help loosen the bolts on the top and it will come right down.
The 2006 Nissan starter can be found on the right hand side of the engine. The starter will be near the bottom of the engine.

You can find the 1991 Nissan starter motor relay switch in the fuse box. The starter motor relay switch will be in the third column, second from the bottom.

The starter on a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder SE V6 is located on the bottom, left side of the engine. It is mounted in place using a series of bolts and a mounting bracket.
Take the steering column housing off (usually held by 4 screws from the bottom) and remove the starter cap from the back of the ignition cylinder. In a Nissan, the ignition cylinder usually has a T shaped pin which turns the starter. if you can start your vehicle by turning the starter cap with a screw driver, you probably don't have an issue with the starter.
Passenger side under the two back cylinders. Two bolts go through the bottom of the starter into the bottom of the block.
On the bottom of the transmission one nut one bolt make sure you remove the battery cable.
On my 1995 4wd V-6 automatic, I had to drop the tie rods and pull out the bottom front. Not too complicated, but need a fork, and my brother in-law had a lift that made it real sweet, but probably not a must have.
I would think it would be the same as my 99, if so the starter is located on the passenger side of the engine below the intake manifold., there is 2 bolts one on top and one on bottom the bolts screw through th engine flange and into the transmission. Don't foget to disconnect the battery first. Also don't forget to hook your ground back up before you put your bottom bolt back in, the bottom bolt goes through the ground connector.
