Big History is the new and emerging academic discipline founded by David Christian and Bill Gates that studies how everything came to be throughout all of time and space from the Big Bang to our modern global civilization. It is a summary of all of reality for the last 13.8 billion years. Big History is interdisciplinary in that it crosses all fields of human knowledge from the natural sciences to the Social Sciences to the humanities. Big History examines how everything came to be from the point of view of 'thresholds of emerging complexity'. These thresholds in a nutshell begin with inanimate energy and matter gradually emerging into life, life gradually emerging into consciousness, and consciousness emerging into society, culture, and civilization. Big History also looks to and speculates about the future in addition to recording the past and explaining the present. There is a possible coming threshold that will be mostly technological and is known by scientists around the world by the names of 'artificial intelligence', 'post-human evolution', 'trans-Humanism', and the 'technological singularity'.
