How to change a 1969 vw beetle clutch cable?
Step one is to remove the large wing nut on the clutch actuating arm on the transaxle, located ahead of the engine, oin the drivers side, on top of the transaxle. Next, you have to remove the accelerator cable from either the pedal assembly, or detatch it from your carb linkage. Lastly, you need to remove the two bolts holding the pedal assembly on, one in front of the accelerator pedal, and one behind it. The pedal assembly should pull right out of it's mounting hole and you will have access to the clutch pedal hook and the clutch cable. Remove the clutch cable, inspect the clutch pedal hook to make sure it isn't getting too worn out ( I have had one of these hooks break off on me from years of driving and a Kennedy pressure plate ), then thread the new clutch cable into it's guide tube, hook the end onto the back side of the clutch pedal, re-install the pedal assembly, then the large wing nut and accelerator cable. broken clutch cable could also be a shot slave cylinder...this will cause the clutch pedal to not come back up.

check if it will go into gear when the engine is turned off. if it will then it is most likely that your clutch cable has become frayed or snapped. your clutch cable runs from the back of the clutch pedal through to the bell shaped clutch housing. you can also tell if its snapped by finding a piece of the cable, not covered in protective coating and gently pulling. If the clutch pedal comes back up when you take your foot off it, it's not snapped. It's either WAY out of adjustment, or your clutch is burned out. And if it's the clutch, your car will have this unbelievable stench. Now, if you push down on the clutch pedal and it goes straight to the floor and stays there, it's definitely the cable. If you DO have that stench, go to Home Depot and buy a can of Zep Smoke Eliminator. It's the only thing I've ever found that will remove the horrible smell.

When you put in the new assembly, hold the pedal up straight so the cable doesn't unhook from the assembly. Then have some one in the back put the cable tight and screw the wing nut on until its tight then let go of the pedal their you have it. put the pedal in an out to make sure it tight if it feel back down then you didn't tighten it enough in the back.

Remove the power distribution center and the transaxle cover. Pull back on the clutch cable housing and disconnect the cable. Pull the cable from the slot in the transaxle and disconnect the cable from the release lever. Push in the clutch cable and remove the cable from the pedal. Pull the cable from the dash using a slight twisting motion. Installation is the reverse proceedure. You may want to get a manual for all the 8x10 glossy photos and stuff.

For access,if fitted remove electrical relay box,(3 bolts)and lay aside,remove hydraulic oilreservoir(1 bolt)and lay aside upright. Measure thread length of inner cable thru the adjuster on clutch arm and note it. Remove retaining clip and cable from clutch arm. In car,remove return spring and cable hook from pedal. Remove cable assembly from bulkhead pulling thru engine compartment. Push new cable thru bulkhead and reconnect cable and return spring to pedal. Back in car,measure distance from top of clutch pedal pad to rim of steering wheel,then depress clutch fully and remeasure.Difference should be 134 to 141mm on rhd car.Adjust at clutch arm to correct it. LHD is 129 to 130mm. When dimension is correct,refit retaining clip on clutch arm. Note Clutch pedal correctly set will be higher than brake and have no free play. Refit relay box and hydraulic res.

Underneath the car on the drivers side slighty behind the front wheel you should see the clutch cable. on there should be an adjustment so you can back the clutch off or give it more. I believe its a 9/16" or 1/2" nut that spins on the clutch cable to adjust it
How do you replace the clutch cable on a 1966 Volkswagen?
For this you don't have to unhook the battery! Step 1: jack up the left side of the car. Crawl under, find the clutch lever and remove the clutch cable adjusting nut. Step 2: open the hood and unhook the accelerator cable. Step 3: remove the two bolts holding the pedal cluster in, and extract the pedal cluster from the car. You will find one of two things: that the clevis on the end of the clutch cable wore through (it's made of pot metal, so it happens), or that the hook on the end of the clutch pedal wore through. The odds of either happening are about equal. If it's the pedal hook, stop what you're doing. Take the pedal cluster away from the car. The hook is pushed into a tube and secured with one small bolt. Remove the bolt, stick a metal rod of some sort on the end of the hook rod that's shoved into the tube, and whack it with a hammer until it comes out. Push a new hook into the tube, align the hole in the tube with the hole in the hook, and install the bolt. Then check the end of the cable just to make sure. If the cable is broken, grab it and pull it out. Take the new cable out of the bag. Dunk it in Rustoleum paint, then hang it up to dry. When it does, thread it into the tube the old one came from, put the clevis on the clutch pedal hook, and reinstall the pedal cluster. Step 4: Crawl back under the car. Thread the end of the cable through the clutch lever, and get the adjusting nut (1966s didn't have wing nuts, but I'd get one when I bought the new cable--they make adjusting the clutch SO nice...) started on the cable. Step 5: Have someone go into the car with a ruler. Press the clutch pedal in about half an inch. When it's down, you screw the adjuster nut down until it touches the clutch lever. Step 6: let the car back down and hook the accelerator cable back up. You're done.
How do you fit a peugeot 106 clutch cable?
To get the cable outer free of the bulkhead you need to work inside the car - the cable is a tight snap fit in the hole with plastic "barbs". I cut a notch in the surrounding rubber gasket so that I could see the end of the cable outer. Then use a pin punch and a hammer to free the cable from the hole. I broke off one of the barbs which is of no consequence on the old cable. As you have discovered, there is no access under the bonnet due to the steering rack. The real joker with this job is access to the top of the clutch pedal to release the spring clip to enable the plastic end of the new cable to be hooked in (this is where they always break). Unless you are Houdini, take the nut off the clutch pedal pivot bolt, get an assisant to open a brake bleed nipple and lower the brake pedal sufficiently to free the captive pivot bolt. Fitting the new cable inner to the top of the clutch pedal is now "easy". Bleed the brake if you have let any air in, and don't forget to top up the fluid. To get the new cable outer back in the hole, refit everything and get an assistant to press the clutch pedal whilst you guide the outer into position under the steering rack. I replaced an auto-adjust cable with a manual adjust type from a motor factor - very cheap. Beware, there are two patterns of cable with differing bulkhead fittings, both are available. The manual adjust cable has been no problem in use and requires very little adjustment, just make sure there is a little free play at the pedal. Best of luck; it's easier than it sounds when you've done one, and mind your back!
