How do you fix a problem on the 2001 New Beetle when the gear shift will not come out of park even when you step on the brake It is intermittent A light next to the P on the column is on it wont shift?

there is a failure on the brake switch
just take call the dealer and make an appointment, they will replace it free of charge even though you didn't buy the car from them.
Recall # 03v265000 for 1999 - 2001 New Beatles The brake lamp switch, I just had VW replace mine today and now it works fine. Hope this helps.
there should be a temporary solution but it should be done only to take it to the dealer.
press the brake hard and turn the swith only 1/4 and you should be able to move it to neutral to start the car.

Had the same problem with mine. The dealership told me it was the backup light switch. I had the same problem, as do 99% of VW beetle owners. There was a recall on the Brake Light Switch.
