My 97 4.0 Ranger's thermostat is in the front of the engine. I has two bolts you have to take off. I had to replace the gasket. Leaked when I got on it hard. It's called the "thermostat housing. Thermostat is easy to replace. Great engine.

locate the top radiator hose and follow it to the motor, unbolt the housing it is connected to and remove the old thermostat replace it and put it back together
Remove the 2 bolts at the thermostat housing. The upper hose goes to the thermostat housing.
The thermostat on a 1997 Ford F-250 is located under the upper hose assembly in the radiator. To locate the thermostat, drain the radiator halfway and remove the hose at the top of the radiator.
follow the top radiator hose to the motor the hose is clamped to the thermostat housing remove the housing and you will find your thermostat
There is supposed to be an engine thermostat . Do you mean that someone has removed the engine thermostat ? What year of Ford Ranger and what year ?
