IF YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR TAIL LIGHT BULB, FIRST OPEN YOUR TRUNK ANDREMOVE A ROUND COVER (on the passenger side, the vent grill is square and is to be removed in order to access the large black wing nut which secures the assembly to the fender. FROM THE INSIDE OF YOUR TRUNK, THERE WILL BE A BLACK KNOB THAT NEEDS TO BE UNSCREWEWED TOTALLY OUT TO RELEASE THE (Tail light housing) BACK LIGHT CASING. NEXT, (The tail light assembly is removed from the exterior, not the trunk -- you need only release the assembly from the inside with one 'wingnut' and then pry the assembly along the thin black seal from the exterior side of the fender. ALONG THE REAR FENDERS WHERE THE LIGHTS ARE, THERE ARE TWO GAPS, THE ONE YOU NEED IS THE GAP CLOSEST TO THE HATCH BACK DOOR (Improvement on the description: there are three points on light housing. The left one call it #1 (while facing the housing) is for rotation and is NOT relevant. The two on the right are at 2:30 (call it #2) and 4:00 (call it #3). They are made of metal and either can be pushed to release the light housing. The housing opens and turn about #1.). INSERT A BUTTER KNIFE OR A THIN OBJECT UNDER THE BLACK RUBBER. THE POINT OF INSERTION SHOULD BE WHERE THE TOP GAP MEETS THE LENSE. THERE IS A RELEASE TAB/CLIP ON THE LIGHT. ONCE YOU PUSH THE TAB(DON'T BE AFRAID TO PUSH HARD, IT TAKES A LITTLE FORCE TO PULL OUT BUT SOME TIMES THE LIGHT JUST POPS OUT). AFTER YOU PULL OUT CASING,YOU'LL FIND TWO LIGHT SWITHCES(ONE IS FOR THE TURN SIGNALS AND OTHER IS YOUR BREAK LIGHTS). TURN THE LIGHT SWITCH COUNTER CLOCKWISE(ASSUMING IT'S HANGING UPSIDE DOWN)AND REMOVE. SWITCH OUT LIGHT BULB WITH NEW ONE(AUTOZONE HAS THEM FOR ABOUT $4.00 - PACKAGE OF 2)REPLACE EVERY THING BACK AS YOU UNINSTALLED IT. ITS RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE ALL BULBS, THAT WAY IT YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN LATER WHEN THEY GO OUT. IT'LL SAVE YOU LOTS OF TIME AND MONEY. HOPE THIS WILL HELP ANYONE SO PRINT AND SAVE IN YOUR MANUAL FOR LATER USE. ONCE YOU DO THIS AND REMOVE THE LENS YOU WANT TO SLAP YOURSELF ON HOW EASY IT IS TO DO IT. THE @#%& DEALER WANT YOU TO LEAVE THE CAR FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS ANF CHARGE $50 FOR A JOB THAT TAKES2-3 MINUTES. THIS INFORMATION WAS COPIED AND EDITED FROM ANOTHER vw OWNER. I HAVE USED IT AND IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM!
When replacing the taillight bulbs there is two things you have to remember, when unscrewing the plastic nut in the back make sure you hold on to it so it doesn't fall down in the body. secondly when "carefully" prying the taillight out make sure you lift from what I would call the 7 O'clock spot if it was a clock, this is where the snap clips are, DON'T PRY FROM THE TOP this is where the factory tabs are and if you break them you need a new taillight- when replacing slide the top (1 o'clock) in first and snap in the bottom. Tada, no hassles and NO breaking stuff that costs money!!
