on each side of the radion there is a cover you need to remove those and insert a FIRM wire through the holes that you see on each side. insert the wire that is u shaped through top and bottom, there are clips on the side of the radio that eed t be pressed inward so you add pressure to the wire outward and pull as you are pressing, this should release the clips. if you don't care for the radio, you can force pry it out cause those lips can be a pain in the butt.
New Method! If you take four 1 1/4" drywall screws and screw them halfway in to the four little holes, pull to the sides and slide out your radio! they are easily sturdy enough to push in the clips and make a great handle to pull the radio out with!
According to my brother (who is a mechanic), The stock stereo in the protege requires radio removal tools (2 sets) to remove -- you can get them at just about any parts store. Just carefully remove the molding around the radio, insert the tools all the way and then pull them outward to release the clips. The radio should just slide out.

The Mazda radio on a 2002 protege comes out just like the Ford radios. First, remove the two plastic hole covers on the left and right sides of the radio. They are about half and inch wide; just jiggle and pry them out. Then you will see the holes where you insert what are called "radio removal keys." On either side there are two small holes separated by an elongated hole. Insert two of the radio removal keys, one in each set of the small holes. You will need two of the U shaped tools, one for either side of the radio. Alternatively, you can make U-shaped tools out of lengths of still coat hanger. Cut them about four inches long, then bend them into a "U" shape with the points as far apart as the holes in the radio. Insert them until you hear a click, then push the left one to the left and the right one to the right. This will depress the clips that hold the radio in. While you're holding the clips out, pull on them and the radio should slide right out. Check out this wiki answers page as well "How to remove and replace the radio from Ford Explorer?" It depends if you have the stock radio there are little plastic vertical end covers that hide in total four holes both left and right. There are DIN removal tools you can get at Walmart or RadioShack that you insert in the holes and allow you to remove the radio from the dash. After you pull the unit partially out, you can access the rear plugs you have to disconnect, including the antennae.

if there are no screws of any kind to sto snap it of carefully. I have a Mazda 929 1990. If you are wanting to remove the radio to replace with a CD player then all u need to do is remove two bolts from the back. This may sound easy but took me a while because they are hard to reach. For the right screw you can reach looking underneath near the brake pedal. For the other I took off the plastic guard underneath the glove compartment. Once this is done try and pop it out.
first don't remove your stock stereo if u havn"t already. The radio works with the carscomputer to reset codes and other stuff. you can get an adapter that turns your speaker wire on the back of the radio into left and right channel to hook up to an aftermarket amplifier. then hook up your new speakers and sub woofer to the amp and use the stock radio to get your grove on. or install an after market radio in the glove box or middle console but don't remove the stock radio. get rid of the stock amp not powerful enough.
You have to remove the whole lower panel of the dash with either Alan or torch wrench.
