ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE PITMAN ARM? MAYBE YOU MEAN THE IDLER ARM? THE PITMAN ARM IS RALREY EVER CHANGED. THIS IS THE ARM THAT CONNECTS THE STEERING LINKAGE TO THE Power Steering BOX. ITS AT THE BASE OF THE STEERING BOX , UNDER THE CAR, IT PROTRUDES FROM THE STEERING BOX SHAFT CONNECTING SAME TO THE CENTER LINK.
With a pitman arm puller.
Some you do and some you don't. If you can put the pitman arm puller on and remove the pitman arm then leave the gear box alone. If the puller won't fit on it Then remove the gear box.
Open the front of the vehicle. Remove the Pitman arm with the Pitman arm puller. Clean the area around the shaft and retaining ring holding the seals and metal washers. Use a shop rag. Put a drain pan under the steering gear. Remove the retaining ring with an internal snap-ring pliers. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel to the left and continue doing so to force the shaft seals and washers out. Turn off the engine and remove the seals and washers. Replace the seals and washers with newly greased Pitman seal and washers and then replace the retaining clip.
Remove bolt from rag joint. You will need a 12 point 1/2 inch socket. Remove the pitman arm nut and use a pitman arm puller to remove the pitman arm from the gear box. Remove the three bolt that hold the gear box to the frame. To install reverse instructions.
first loosen the nut on the pitman arm then separate the pitman arm from the gearbox using a pitman arm puller.then remove three or four bolts from gearbox to vehicle frame, that's it!
According to my internet research, to change the pitman and idler arm on a Chevy truck, one must remove the two bolts holding the idler arm as well as the nut holding it to the truck. Then to remove the pitman arm, remove the nut and the drag link.
on my 1985 Lincoln town car i had to remove the dash and get back to the firewall and remove a panel on the firewall to get to it. good luck it is a pain.
Remove the passenger side wheel well liner and it's to your left, remove lines and replace.
The easiest way is go remove the front.differential u have to remove cv axles outer tierods and pitman and idel arm and front.drive shaft its tricky to get it out but not that hard
you half to loosen the 33 mm seck bolt, separate the end going into the center link, just give it a good whack then lube the end of the pitman arm with the splines and pray.................................. then install you pitman arm puller and if you prayed hard enough it will pop right off if not you didn't pray had enough then see a a.s.e certified tech
Remove the oil pan and there it is...
Bring it to the garage. it is a pain. you have to remove the power steering pump
