Remove the rubber boot by taking out the 4 Philips screws in the pastic base then lift it off. the boot is attached to the plastic. Then pull the next rubber mat up enough to get to the 3 torx screws, These are what holds the shifter in. MAKE SURE THE VEHICAL IS IN NEUTRAL. Remove the screws and lift the shifter out.

There is one illumination bulb to light up the gear shift indicator. Remove the center rear console, then the console around the shift lever, and you will see the wires on the left side that go to the bulb. Twist the small socket and it will come out, then just put in a new bulb.
its not screwed in. Just pull it out as hard as you can.

You may have to move the shifter to LOW to access the area well enough to see it. Before you do, be sure to set the parking brake securely. You will need to turn the key to the "ACC" or "RUN" position to release the auto shift lever. Alternately you can insert your key into the shift lock release slot next to the shift lever.
need to know where the shift solenoid is on a 96 Chevy lumina is located so that i can switch out the part. the one that i bought is a shift and lock solenoid, so where is that at on the transmission?
pull out the u-shaped hook that holds it in. it faces the dash. you might have to put the gear into 1st or 2nd to have enought room.
I'll answer the question myself. It can be done from the top, had to do the job today and found that it was a piece of cake.
Into Park or out of Park?
There is a lever on the left side of the column that unlocks it.
You must be able to turn the lock to remove it. First,unscrew the tilt lever,then remove the 3 screws underneeth the colum trim cover and remove them. Then turn the key to the "RUN" position. On the back of the lock is a release button press it in with a small screw driver and remove the lock cylinder.
