On a 1996 Ford Explorer : There are ( 2 ) lower ball joints on the front suspension . Each lower control arm , drivers side and passenger side has ( 1 ) ball joint
I believe you can change just the ball joint on the lower control arms , the upper ball joints come with a new control arm

Remove the tire and wheel. Remove the brake assembly and rotor. Remove the retaining nut from the ball joint. Pound the ball joint out with a hammer. Reverse the process to install the new ball joint.

Just learned this the hard way today after trying to do it myself. The ball joint will not come out until you remove the brake caliper and rotor. Too time consuming for a do it yourselfer in my opinion...I had the shop down the street replace the ball joint for 1.1 hours labor (about $80).
