This list is specific to the 1992 Cherokee with the 4.0l I6 engine- hope it helps: loosen and remove the belt(s) Unbolt the exhaust/intake manifolds (there are 13 bolts i think... maybe 15) and discard the gasket- one bolt goes through the Power Steering mount unbolt the valve cover about 15 bolt unbolt the head (all remaining bolts on the top, and going in sideways from the AC compressor discard head gasket, and clean ALL gasket mating surfaces Put it all back together. MAKE SURE you follow the manual's bolt torquing pattern!!! otherwise you just did a bunch of work for nothing. By removing the head and replacing the gasket.
although somewhat simple to most repair techs, the head gasket is not something to be done by a non-qualified person. if you don't torque it down right or have the knowledge on how to check it, this is better off left to a reapair facility. however, that's not to say that with the right tools and basic repair knowledge it can't be done. What most of us would recommend to anyone who wants to try and has nothing to loose by attempting it is that they get a chiltons book from the auto parts store (around $16.00 U.S) and follow the steps listed for your vehicle. without diagrams it may not be as simple as it sounds. However, after removing the heads, make sure to have a reputable machine shop inspect the heads. If the vehicle overheated, have it magnufluxed to check for cracks and it may need to be resurfaced. If it is timing related, you may need a valve job. but try to go to the mom and pop type shops, they tend to be more personalized to your specific needs and tend to do only what you need. We find a lot of bigger shops want the whole anchilada or nothing.... Good luck
If youre more specific as what motor you currently have I can help. Im a certified Ford technician. blubyu88@hotmail.com . In a nutshell, gasket replacement consists of removing the valve cover, then the head, cleaning the head of the old gasket and then replacing and reinstalling. However that's a VERY general description. In some instances you have to remove upper and lower intakes, fuel rails, coolant lines, EGR tubes, various connectors which may be old and brittle. On overhead camshaft motors, you may need to remove the timing chains which requires special timing tools to reset the timing and knowledge of the procedure. If youre not mechanically inclined and don't have a good set of tools I would recommend against trying this yourself. Get back to me with what motor you have and I can assist you further.
