How do you replace the water pump on a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird 4 cylinder?
It dep[ends on exctly which engine you have as to how difficult it is, Get a manual you your car and do the job correctly .
I done mine recently.......Wholy Crap.....Pay someone to do it. The water pump is part of the timing belt, What a job! you may even have to lift the engine a bit so it will clear the frame, when taking it out. I got mine all back together with a new pump, but it idles rough now as I got the timing belt off a bit. Really......Pay a professional , its worth it.
Best way to fix it is to replace it. I had not the correct tool or even knew what the correct tool is and took the car to a shop to replace the Timing belt and Water pump. The shop folk replaced my supplied Drivebelt Tensioner at no additional charge since as they said "We're gonna be in the area anyways".
Your 1993 Pontiac Sunbird LE 4cyl keeps over heating If you remove the thermostat it stays cool I replaced the thermostat twice what could it bevI have no coolantleak or water in the exhaust?
I was having the same problem with my car. When you take the thermostat out it will automatically read cool. But I later found out that I had a leak in my radiator and had to replace it. Turned out that my heads are warped and was leaking oil into my water and into the radiator itself. Once i replaced the radiator its been fine.
If it had a cam belt I would recommend you change it at the same time as the cam belt. However the 4 cylinder 2003 has a cam chain, so no maintenance is required. Replace the water pump when it fails or starts leaking. Or as preventive maintenance you can just replace it at 100,000 miles. Your choice.
I don't know the cost as that depends on where you live, but may I give you some advice. As the water pump is driven by the timing belt, if this car has over 100,000 miles on it, replace the timing belt at the same time as the belt. This will save you money down the road when the pump fails. The belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles.
