Christian Rock Music did not exist in 1967. Mind Garage, a psychedelic hard rock group is considered the first "Christian Rock band". They were the first rock band to bring drums, amps, guitars into church for a live orthodox rock and roll worship service at the suggestion of Reverend Michael Paine, West Virginia University chaplin. The beginnings of Christian Rock are completely documented from 1967 to 1970 in the local and national magazines and newspapers such as The Village Voice, Billboard and Rolling Stone magazine and also on prime time national news shows ( Huntley-Brinkley News, NBC TV ) and specials on ABC TV. In July of 1968, the term "theo-rock" was coined in the Village Voice Newspaper in reference to The Mind Garage worship service.

In a California church named Calvary Chapel, the pastor allowed converted hippies to write the first Christian rock songs for his church worship team. Later the church started its own record label.

In 1970 a guy named Larry Norman became the next Christian rocker to be listened to nationally. He toured with mainstream rock bands, and most Christians didn't except him. He was quoted as saying, "Why should the devil have all the good music?" Today he is known as the "father of Christian rock".

Then the 1970s The Resurrection Band, also known as Rez, came along. They helped to make Christian rock much more like the mainstream.

Stryper came on scene in the 1980s as the first Christian metal band. They were a hair metal band that became extremely popular with most Christian teens, even though they were considered very contraversial. (In about 2005, Stryper got back together again.)

In 1989 DC Talk was formed, and they are the ones who made Christian rock more acceptable, along with the Newsboys. In 1995 DC Talk wrote the biggest break-through song ever heard in Christian music, the song "Jesus Freak". DC Talk broke up around 2000, but all three of the vocalists are around as solo artists; they are Toby Mac, Tait, and Kevin Max.

In the early 1990s, the new record label Tooth & Nail signed a band called MxPx. MxPx was the first Christian punk rock band, and they are also the band that kept Tooth & Nail Records from closing in its early years. MxPx had amazing success in the mainstream and was named one of the country's top ten punk bands. However, the first huge mainstream success came in 2004 with Switchfoot.

It has changed in the sense that it is no longer Christian. The church has mixed the profane and the sacred. Look at the Megafest, where secular artists like Patty Labelle perform with other so-called "Christian" artists. They are idols now.

Rock music has changed for the worse in my opinion. The guitar used to be creative and inventive. There are no more "stars". The lyrics have gotten worse. With the advances of the technological aspects of music, much of the sounds in moder rock are generated. Rock used to have much more blues influence also. Now rock music seems to lean towards Pop Music.

Another answer:Some would argue that rock music has not changed enough to remain viable; that nostalgia is the primary reason it still exists.

Many people, including some well-known artists, have observed that rock musicians have fully explored all the possibilities of the genre; the harmonic structure, rhythms, instrumentation and counter-cultural attitude have all become clichés. To do something truly creative and inventive at this point, you have to step outside the genre and do something that no one would identify as "rock".

Styles of music cannot last forever. There are plenty of excellent players out there, but no amount of creativity or virtuosity can recapture the excitement that was generated when Beethoven or The Beatles or Debussy or Hendrix or Nirvana were heard for the first time.

I certainly would not blame technology. Rock was able to develop in the '60s and '70s because of new technology; it is not logical to conclude that the continuing advance of technology has now somehow become an obstacle. It is only an impediment if musicians use it to effortlessly recreate the same old sounds (and it is certainly good at that).

It began when white people tried to play the Blues and accidentally mixed it up with Country Music. America loved this odd sound, which caught on like wildfire. It subsided somewhat when Elvis went into the army, but went Supernova when the Beatles appeared. The reverberations from this Big Bang still haven't died down, and its been almost fifty years! Jazz was blown out of the water. Even Rap can't stop Rock, as the grand-kiddies seem to like it too, and are forming bands as an old, old tradition. Rock went insane in the Sixties, when every form of music on earth was incorporated into it. Then Punk Rock arose as a reaction against Disco in the Seventies. Rock became stale and formulaic in the Eighties. Today, many more Oldies CD's are sold than current records, and the music industry is on the ropes and almost dead, but Rock shows no signs of stopping. The stripped down hot-rod is still zooming ahead, but into static faceless territory. Its future is unknown.

One way Gospel Music has changed over time is that it went from being strictly Evangelical to being influenced by a variety of musical genres. It also began to reach and appeal to a louder audience outside of the church.

Is The Rock a Christian?

Yes, in fact it is. All music is Christian; it just matters on who and how you sing it. All music genres have a bad history, (especially rap/urban music) and some people just won't accept it as Holy music. But God has created all music for Him, but man has changed it and used it in their own evil ways.
