Well, in my social studies class right now we are studying the Civil War. After the draft law was put in place in early 1863, as well as the Empancipation Proclamation right before, there were many riots against it. Immigrants were concerned about the free slaves taking all of the jobs. There were riots against blacks all over the North. Two of the most popular took place in New York and Detroit.
The immigrants in the US Civil War worked in factories, enlisted in the army, substituted for soldiers in the army, and brought special skills to both the Northern and Southern economies. Their impact however, was light concerning the Confederacy. The impact of immigrants was more important in the Northern US cities like New York City. However, they were paid at a very low rate. In a more negative way, the Irish immigrants working on the docks and factories of New York City staged a harmful and racist draft riot in July of 1863. This caused President Lincoln to send 20,000 US troops from Gettysburg to end the rebellion which killed about 500 people.
Though originally founded by the French on May 7. 1718, by the early 1800's sparked a large influx of Immigration in the city. By the 1830's and 1840's, the growth of European immigrants exploded, especially those with German and Irish backgrounds.
More than 800,000 European immigrants arrived during the Civil War and provided labor for factories and farms.
Between 1861 and 1865 approximately 800,000 immigrants entered the US. Most of these people added to the population of the Northern states.
