Wow, the number is high. I see such terrible waste in the school system. Years ago the children were fed in a lunch line with the staff doling out the food, now the children take too much and throw it all away, then go and get an ice cream. The stores too waste, when something is a day old or such instead of giving it away because the are legally not allowed to sell it they throw it away. Buffets are wasteful because they discard foods not eaten at the end of the night. I dont they should serve it the next day, but package it up and give it to the local shelter for meals, leftovers are better then nothing. Even in hospitals they waste, they bring meals to people that either dont like what they have or cant possibly eat after certain procedures, just to give it a try, and it gets thrown away, if I had to guess, I would say the number in pounds is in the hundred of thousands in America every day. Spoiled is our middle name here, no pun intended.
According to this article on American garbage (http://www.learner.org/interactives/garbage/intro.html), the average American throws away 4.6 pounds of solid waste per day.
4.6 pounds of trash per day x 7 days per week = 32.2 pounds of trash per week
32.2 pounds of trash per week x 304,059,724 people in the United States as of this writing according to Google = 980803112.8pounds of American trash per week.
Thats horrible! :/I hope that helped!
The average American uses an average of about 1,500 lbs per year.

the us wastes about over 356 billion pounds and 96.4 billion is ediable. . Fresh produce, milk, grain products and sweeteners made up two-thirds of the waste. A more recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that Americans generate roughly 30 million tons of food waste each year, which is about 12 percent of the total waste stream. All but about 2 percent of that food waste ends up in landfills; by comparison, 62 percent of yard waste is composted. Of course, eliminating food waste won't solve the problems of world hunger and greenhouse-gas pollution. But it could make a dent in this country and wouldn't require a huge amount of effort or money. The Department of Agriculture estimated that recovering just 5 percent of the food that is wasted could feed four million people a day; recovering 25 percent would feed 20 million people.

Yes, cactuses make food. They make food when they make energizing carbohydrates and sugars from dissolved nutrients and water, through the photosynthetic interaction with the sun. They also make food when their roots release waste products as exudates into soil. And they make food when their fruits and other body parts feed wildlife and people.
