on the front axle housing that locks front diff.in 4x4
Might be a 4x4 cable on front axle. Disconnect it from the actuator or where it runs to underneath the battery. Once the cable is unhooked, it can not be in 4x4.
front axle actuator not disengaging probally due to rotted vacume line across crossmember
The vacuum switch is on the top of the transfer case. The 4wd indicator switch is on the front axle shift actuator.
The actuator of the Dodge Ram 4x4 is located on the top of the front differential. Depending on the year, the actuator is either vacuum or manually operated.
It could either be a problem with your 4x4 switch in the cab, the actuator that connects the front right axle shaft to the drivetrain, or the transfer case itself not sending power to the front driveshaft.
There is either a problem with the actuator in the front differential--BAD ACTUATOR. Are there is a problem with the differential ---RING and PINION asembley.
It is a solenoid that engages the front axle. The driver side axle is always engaged, the actuator engages the passenger side axle through a fork locking in the front axle. When you engage 4x4 in the truck, a switch on the transfer case allows power to the actuator. The newer actuators are all electric, the older models are gas over electric, and could act slowly. if at all. GM does make a conversion kit to mount the newer style actuator on older trucks. The 4x4 on those models does not always kick in right away. You may have to put it in 4x4 and drive up to 150 yards before it goes in. If it still doesn't go in you probly have a bad actuator on the axle.
There is an electrical switch screwed into the side of the transfer case that completes the circuit when you shift it into 4-wheel drive.
If your asking about the 4x4 actuator, then it is screewed into the front differential passenger side but towards the middle.
It does not have one. It has a 4x4 Actuator in the front housing.
