While it may seem scary to change the evaporator core, it's not as bad as you would think. If you're sure it's the core, ie., you added uv dye to your ac low pressure line and checked your ac system with an ultra violet light, all of which you can get at NAPA for <$30, then the steps to replace your core are as follows:

Step 1. Go to an AC shop and get them to remove any freon in your ac system. THis shouldn't cost that much, call a few of them to check price. It is illegal to vent the refrigerant into the atmosphere, it's bad stuff.

Step 2. Remove your glove box, the bar the glove box rest on, and the duct directly behind it. I had to pull the duct as far as I could to the left and spread the fittings it connects to, to get it out.

Step 3. The plack box with wires connected to it, directly behind the duct is your evaporator housing. It can be taken of separately from the heater core and the ducting for outside/inside air Theres 4 or 5 number 10 bolts that hold it in on the corners, near the floor and under the dash. Also, you'll need to unclip some wires and the outside air vent bike cable from hooks and unplug the wires.

Step 4. once the plastic housing seems to be loose from the rest of the ducting you'll have to unscrew the low/high side ac lines that go into the cabin. They'll be on the back of the engine compartment on the passenger side, the fittings are next to the filling valves in the lines. also, you'll want to loosen the ac line boots that go into the firewall. They'll be taking a ride into your passenger compartment.

Step 5. Hopefully you'll be able to pull the evaporator to freedom with some wiggling and uncliping/unscrewing the last few screws and the spring clips to get into the evaporator housing will be a breeze and you'll have no problem figuring out how replace the evaporator from here. be sure to use new o-rings on any line that you are unscrewing.

Replacement is opposite.

On my 96, regular cab Tacoma; this took me around 2.5 hours, while I was watching masterchef episodes on my cell phone. I thought that my problem was my evaporator but it turned out to be a small fitting the t's off the line to the expansion valve, which is a milled piece of aluminum that the lines fit into from the evaporator. I also made the mistake of taking apart more of my dash than needed. You can do it and save yourself around $250 dollars!

Is it possible for the evaporator valve to stick in a 1997 Camaro RS and how hard is it to change?

I am not exactly sure of what you are asking but there is not an evaporator valve. There is an evaporator core that resembles a radiator and there are not any parts that can stick. The only problem they have is leaking. There is an orfice that goes in the inlet to the evaporator and it has no moving parts. It can get stopped up and cause the high side pressure to get higher than normal.
