My experience is with my 95 Grand Cherokee Limited and it may not apply completely to your 01 but:

Jeep Cherokees are constructed with a unibody as are many cars. This means there isn't a frame underneath the vehicle. Vehicles with frames and most unibody constructed vehicles have a rubber tube that exits the evaporator at a low spot and drains condensate onto the ground. The evaporator pan can get mucky as well as the tube in these vehicles and its a simple matter of finding this tube sticking out underneath and blowing compressed air up it which would be a cheap and quick, although not thorough fix. Jeep engineers, in their infinite wisdom, chose to run the condensate into a unibody rail directly from the condensor box and therefore there is no tube to blow out and no way to clean it other than to dismantle the box. On my 95 we find that the condensor box is half in the engine compartment and half in the passenger compartment very low on the passenger side under the carpet almost. Inside the box is a thin formed styrofoam liner that is supposed to prevent moist air from condensing on the outside of the box in the passenger compartment and making the floor wet. The trouble is that this liner disintegrates after just a few years which adds to the muck that accumulates in the box. You may even see what looks like pieces of styrofoam cup in the dash vents. This is bits of that liner that were blown up into the ductwork of the car. They also can clog the mechanisms that direct the air from the dash to the floor etc. The correct fix involves dismantling the complete dash to extract the box, take it apart and clean the system and replace the liner. I've gotten quotes from reputable repair places ranging from $900.00 to over $1300.00. Most of this is labor. The styrofoam liner costs about $80.00 (for about 10 cents of styrofoam) and barring any other problem should be the only part you'd have to buy.

There are any number of "how to" articles in these forums concerning this as well as several "work arounds" that involve drilling a new hole in the bottom of the box and running an alternate drain. Should you decide to get the drill out and perform surgery be aware that the evaporator coil is very close to the inside of the box and it would be a very expensive mistake to drill a hole in the coil. If you decide to dismantle the dash it might be wise to have a second back up car to drive for a week or so while you puzzle out all the parts that make up the dash. Remember that my experience is with a 95 and not an 01 but I'm willing to bet that the basic design hasn't changed much over the years. Good luck and please post any new information that you may come across as you deal with this issue.

Where is the air conditioner drain line on a 1998 jeep grand Cherokee?

There isn't a drain line. The jeep has a unibody frame construction and the evaporator pan drains directly into a frame member making it impossible to blow air up a tube to clear the drain path. Very poor engineering in my opinion.

What is the hour estimate to replace the evaporator for 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport?

Labor times vary based on the location and experience of mechanical shops. Replacing the evaporator for a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport requires a tremendous amount of work such as removing the dash, draining the Freon, and pressurizing the A/C system. The average national time to replace an evaporator unit is between eight and ten work hours.

Why would the ac leak out on the floorboard on a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The A/C Evaporator in your Jeep is leaking into the vehicle because the condensate drain is plugged and if it can't drain out easily it must go somewhere so in it goes following the path of least resistance , This usually means a wet carpet on the passenger side , This drain is not visible from the outside and jeep has serviced this problem by drilling a small hole from the inside through the black plastic drain fitting located behind the rug and just above the passengers left foot on the firewall. If this has been serviced it will have the hole drilled and a small rubber plug sealing the hole , pull the plug out and probe forward to try to clear any obstruction.

Where is the inside overflow tube for the air conditioner in a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The drain for the A/C is on the outside behind the rt front wheel against the firewall. Ther should be a small hole in the evaporator case. Don't use anything sharp to unclog it as the evaporator is just above it and it can be punctured.

When replacing the AC evaporator in a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee are there any other components that need to be changed?

the receiver dryer and the orifice tube My 95 had a styrofoam liner in the evaporator box that had crumbled with age and plugged up not only the drain tube but the vent tubes. I would replace that as well as long as you have the dash apart. It is not a must but Personally I would consider replacing the heater core since you have to remove it to get the evaporator out anyway.
