the ignition switch is commonly caled the key lock clyinder
If you have tilt steering then you need to take it to a dealership they will have a specail tool to remove the pivot pins in the steering column housing. this makes key lock cylinder replacement impossible for the home auto repair technician.
if it is not tilt steering 1) remove negative battery cable 2) remove steering wheel: probably need steering wheel puller for this. 3) remove turn signal switch assembly 4) place lock cylinder in RUN position 5) remove turn signal switch housing screws 6) remove turn signal switch housing and steering shaft assembly : as complete unit: 7) lift the switch tab with a screwdriver then GENTLY pull on the buzzer switch wires and remove the buzzer switch 8) place the lock cylinder in the accessory position 9) remove retaing screws fro lock clyinder and remove the lock cylinder. 10) reverse to install.
hope this helps wolverine
How do you remove acuator switch
how can you start a '89 mercury cougar with a broken ignition switch?
On my 89 Corsica switch on column under dash and may be difficult to replace without lowering column. I unplugged old switch, plugged in new switch, set it to dim and wired it to column so now only have dim lights so this might work for you as I believe Berretta and Corsica the same for this.
On top of the steering column, behind the dash.
you unscrew it from the steering colum but the real question is WHERE DO YOU BUY AN "UPPER IGNITION ACTUATOR"?
I had to change the ignition switch on my 89 Cadillac eldorado and belive me it is lots of work!! you need some special tools for taking out the sterring wheel and one for puting it back in. In my case it was the ignition switch itself had overheated and seized up. Replace the switch (have to lower the column, disconnect the wiring plug from the switch, and remove/replace the switch.) Clean all connections to the switch, make sure they're connected solidly and not heating up again.
Pull the steering wheel Remove the steering wheel lock by compressing it and removing the small metal ring that holds it in place. Remove the screw that holds the bracket from the turn signal switch to the turn signal lever. Remove the screw that holds the knob on for the 4 way flashers. Remove the 3 screws that hold the turn signal switch and carefully slide the switch out. Remove the 2 screws that hold the key lock into the column and slide it out.
How to Replace ingnitionTo replace the ingition switch it is real easy. First you must remove the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller. Then you remove the plastic cover that protects the steering coloum. then remove the four way flashers switch with a Phillips screw. back inside the coloum remove the the other screw from the turn signal arm screw. after that you will see 3 more Phillips screws remove them and carfully remove the plastic turn signal gears. once that is done you will either see a torqes screw or a Phillips screw remove that and pull the ignition out and put the new once in and reverse the instruction to put it back together.
the thick cable goes to the battery positive terminal . one thin wire goes to ignition switch
you need to first remove the dust cover on the transaxle then remove the taran saxle itself. after this take apart the transmission housing and just switch them out.
do you want to know how to replace the ignition switch, which is not visible, and is the electrical part lower down on the column, or do you want to know how to replace the ignition lock cylinder, where you put the key in? *another thing to remember is that there was a recall on that part of an 89 f150. you can get it fixed for free at any ford dealership.
