The Medici family dynasty was active in the affairs of the Republic of Florence (now northwestern Italy) mostly around the 15th century. They controlled the "wool guild" and other mercantile activities, and exerted much political authority within the city and republic. They were the also patrons of some Renaissance artists, and are credited with introducing valuable accounting principles in Europe.

The entire period of the Medici authority extended from about 1433 to 1737.
