It was rough on them at first as they didn't know how to properly use the land for food. Some early settlements actually died out. Once the native allies taught the early settlers they began to live much easier.

The first Europeans to arrive in North America -- at least the first for whom there is solid evidence -- were Norse, traveling west from Greenland, where Erik the Red had founded a settlement around the year 985. In 1001 his son Leif is thought to have explored the northeast coast of what is now Canada and spent at least one winter there. The British tried to establish a settlement in Virginia, known as Roanake, Virginia, in 1587 but the colony, known as the lost colony, did not survive. The Jamestown colony in 1607 was the first permanent British colony in North America. The first people into the Americas were nomadic hunters. We don't consider them "Native Americans" as they weren't born here and they predate the development of today's Native Americans(Indians). Rather we call them "PaleoIndians."They walked across dry land from Asia. The date they arrived is in dispute and keeps being pushed back. The land bridge existed between 10,000 and 25,000 yeas ago.

during the palaeolithic period, which was part of the stone Age,Europe was very cold. the first people to arrive here were called the Cro- Magnons. they lived in caves when they could ,but when they couldn't find a cave to shelter in, they made simple tents using anything they could find, This might be the branches of trees or the bones of a woolly mammoth to make the frame of the tent , covered with animal skins to keep the wind , rain and snow. the Cro magnons are thought to be the first humans to built houses

They lived in houses of soil, and it was so hot they digged swimming holes and used them all summer. They ate mice and fried worms. they sometimes had berries, but they were scarce.
