First of all, it the plug gap is too large the cyl. will not fire, or fire poorly. and, if there is no spark due to that, then the timing lite will not read anything.

How do you check the timing on a 1989 ford tempo using a timing light?

Find timing marks 1 on cranshaft and a staionary one mounted to engine around crankshaft area Highlight appropriate mark with chaulk Disconnect #1 spark plug and install timing light between plug wire and spark plug Connect timing light to battery terminals Disconnect and plug vacuum advance line if so equipped Start engine and observe spark flash on timing marks Adjust distributor accordingly to align marks

How do hook a timing light to a 1970 slant six dodge?

hot wire on the timing light goes to pos. side of the battery and the neg. side of timing light goes to ground on the engine someplace and then the plug clip goes on the #1 spark plug wire.

How do you set the timing on a 1965 gmc truck?

You need a timing light, hooked to the #1 spark plug, pointed at the timing mark on the main pulley on the front of the engine.

How do you use a timing gun?

Connect the power leads to the vehicle battery. Connect the control lead to the plug wire on the first cylinder spark plug. With the engine running, aim the light at the timing marks to read the timing of the engine.

What causes an engine to miss at high RPM's?

To much base timing or cam/crank timing. Spark plugs, spark plug wire, ignition coils, coil on plug(COP). Fuel pressure/delivery. Contaminated fuel.

What is the timing setting for a 1.8 dual overhead cam Kia Sephia?

Apply parking brake. Warm up engine to normal operating temperature. Turn OFF all electrical loads. Connect timing light to number one spark plug wire. NOTE: A rubber inspection plug has been provided in the plastic coil cover (center of the cylinder head cover) directly over the number one (1) spark plug wire. Remove the inspection plug and connect the inductive pick-up of your tachometer or timing light to the number one (1) spark plug wire. If your tachometer/timing light inductive pick-up is too large, the coil cover will have to be removed. Verify that ignition timing marks on crankshaft pulley and timing mark on timing belt cover are aligned. Ignition Timing: BTDC 8

How do you set timing on1991 Cadillac brougham?

Take the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder. Have someone stick a finger over the hole (but not into it, naturally). Bump the starter until a burst of air pushes their finger out. That's the point where the #1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center. Replace the spark plug and spark plug wire. Unbolt the distributor to loosen it. Hook up the timing light.. the red cable to the battery positive, the ground to either the battery negative or a good ground point, and the last cable goes on the wire to the #1 spark plug. Start the vehicle, and aim the timing light at the timing marks. Rotate the distributor to advance or retard the ignition timing until it's right.

How do you hook up strob light in a car?

Most automotive timing lights (or "strobe" lights because of their pulsing light when operated) have three wires --- one for positive (the red clip), one for negative (the black clip), and one for the #1 spark plug. Before starting, determine which plug on your engine is the #1 -- generally, it's the one closest to the radiator fan on a 4-cylinder and on a 6 or 8-cylinder the same but on the right or left side depending on the engine. Hook the red clip to the positive post on the battery, the black clip to the negative post, and the third wire to the #1 spark plug. If your timing light has an "inductive" pickup clip (MUCH easier, btw), then simply hook the clip to the #1 spark plug wire, making sure the correct side of the clip is facing the spark plug. There should be an indicator on the clip informing you which side faces the plug. If your timing light has a "direct connector" to the #1 plug, then remove the spark plug wire boot from #1, and connect the "direct connector" between the top of the #1 plug and the spark plug wire boot. And you're good to go!

What is the ignition timing point gap and spark plug gap for a 1973 Pontiac 455 v8?

What is the proper spark plug gap for a 71 Chevy Chevelle 350?

Spark plug gap is .035, point gap is .017 to .019 or 30 degrees dwell. Timing with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged is 4 degrees. If you have a timing light with a dial for total advance then it is 35 degrees at 2,000 RPM.
