The average ice cream sandwich contains about 150 calories, of which about 50 are fat and practically all of the rest sugar.

Weight gain, and loss, are accomplished over a period of time, not by eating one meal or snack. It's all the extra calories combined over time that put on the weight. An occasional ice cream sandwich or two won't hurt. It's the two or three a day (or worse, two or three sugared soft drinks a day) that make a difference.

In order to gain one pound, you must eat 3,200 calories that remain unburned -- in other words, 3,200 more than your body needs. So two ice cream Sandwiches would be equivalent to about 1/10 of a pound, assuming that their calories were not burned.

Likewise, you lose one pound for every 3,200 calories that you burn, provided that they are not replaced. That's why it's so important to eat reasonably and get plenty of exercise. That way you never get very far behind your calorie count, and it is easy to make adjustments in how much you eat -- and what.

It's also why weight control must be habitual over a lifetime. Dieting doesn't get the job done for very long, because as soon as the diet is over, we go back to our old eating habits and the weight comes right back.
