Certain countries e.g. Mexico , Columbia won't ask you to furnish details of a return ticket but will rather give you a limited visa generally for theee months. Other countries such as America would ask you more stringent questions including your return dates to the country of origin. I think you are in a better position getting your return tickets as a round fare is cheaper than a one way and keeps you moving quicker in Immigration lines since you have evidence of intended travel back readily available.
