Are you in a climate which is cool at this time of year? If so, your snail could be hibernating. Otherwise, look up a local snail farm and give them a phone call before you try disturbing your snail. Your local museum should also be able to help, or you can go to one of the comprehensive sites on the net; try this one: http://www.efarmspro.com/snailfarming.php
nothing its dead ;)
The spiral shelled mollusk that many people know these days are the snail it is a spiral shell to protect this animal from its prey.
In pieces yes, and the odor is most foul. If a snail remains unmoving for a couple of days and you still see a his shoe and wonder if he yet lives, simply pick it up out of the water and give it a sniff. It is unmistakable if it is dead. Snails grow their shells while crabs kill the snails for the shells or collect empty shells. As the snail grows so does it shell, where a crab must replace and upgrade its residence as it grows.
Its probably REALLY frightened! Or sleepy, just leave it.
The Mystery Snail will crawl out of The tank and bite you, so get some gloves or something so it does not get slime on you.
If a mystery snail has not moved for more then 3 days, it is likely to be dead. If you do not see it move, this does not mead it is dead. Some snails ony come out at night. If you do not see a snail move, but it is in a different place everyday, it is fine. If it has not moved at all in 3 or more days, it is likely that it is not alive as it will be starving or starved to death. You can try taking a snail out of the tank and keeping it in a separate bucket with some food. This will also help to not polute the tank. If the bucket starts smelling really bad, then it is definitely dead.
If it's still tight up in its shell, I mean no flesh is showing, and the operculum is all you see, then it's still alive ( it takes muscle tension to stay this way) if not I would take it out and poke it a few times and see if it retracts further, if not smell it if it stinks real bad, it's dead.
IF you are talking about in an aquarium: snail would close up into its shell and live for a few days then die. In the wild: they would move to new environment, some would die.
