BMW has been producing motorcycles since 1921 and have been in the motorcycle business ever since. Speed records, technical innovations, and many racing wins in the 1930's put BMW Motorcycles at or near the top.

In 1976 Reg Pridmore, riding a race version of the R90, won the first AMA superbike championship. In 1981 A french rider aboard a modified R/80 GS BMW won the difficult Paris-Dakar offroad race. BMW will race in the 2009 superbike series with a specially built road race motorcycle.

In 2009 BMW makes liquid cooled single cylinder, liquid cooled vertical twin cylinder, air and oil cooled opposed twin cylinder, and liquid cooled inline four cylinder motorcycles. Do they make the best?

BMW fit and finish is universally respected. BMW design innovation, particularly in suspension and braking is well established...but are BMW the best?

The R1200GS has been awarded 'bike of the year' several times and is often cited as the worlds best 'large displacement adventure motorcycle'. The F650 and G650 have been said to be the the best large displacement single cylinder motorcycles in the world, but the acclaim is not universal. Honda, KTM, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha also make fine motorcycles. Aprilia, Ducati, and the smaller brands of Europe also make unique and well made machines.

To answer your question, you'd have to state what you want to do with the motorcycle. Do you want to commute to work? Ride the Sahara desert? Race at the track? Do you want the machine to be the pinnacle of technology or must it be simple enough for you to work on by the side of the road?
