No, it is not. In fact, "Obama" is not a Muslim name at all. It is an African family name common to certain people who are part of an ethnic group that resides in Kenya. "Barack" is an Arabic name that means "blessed," and in Africa, there are boys who are Muslims, as well as boys who are not Muslims, who are given that name. Barack Obama's father named him, and the future president never changed the name his father gave him.

President Obama's full name is Barack Hussein Obama. Obama is not a Muslim name but Hussein is. Hussein is an Arabic name commonly given to Shia Muslims. It means "good," "handsome," or "beautiful."

Obama's Father was Barack Obama Sr. and was born into a Muslim and Christian family in Kenya but grew up to be an atheist. Obama is a common surname in the Luo tribe in Kenya. Obama Sr.'s Father was Hussein Onyango Obama who converted from Roman Catholicism to Islam and took the name Hussein.

The name "Barack" is a name that many Muslims have; it is also common among non-Muslims. It means "blessed." The name is common in Africa and the Middle East. As for "Obama," that seems to be a family name common to a particular lineage in Kenya, the country in Africa where the president's father was born. President Obama is named after his father, Barack Obama Senior.

He had nothing to do with it. He inherited that name from his biological father. Ironically, although Barack Obama Senior named his son that way, he was not in his son's life at all. So the only thing President Obama has to remember his dad by are a couple of old photographs and the name. It should be noted the name is NOT Muslim-- Barack is an Arabic word that means "blessed," while Obama is an African family name common to certain members of an ethnic group that lives in Kenya. But Mr. Obama's dad was not a Muslim. He was born into a Muslim family, but he left the religion and became an atheist long before his son was born.

Is Obama the 1st president with a Muslim name?

Actually, his name is as much African as it is Muslim-- the names Barack and Hussein, which come from his father, are common Arabic names that many Muslim men have. But the name Obama does not appear to be Arabic or Muslim; it seems to be a tribal name, common to a certain part of Kenya in Africa. That said, yes most American presidents have tended to have Anglo-Saxon names like George or William or John. Mr. Obama, while born in the United States, is the first biracial and the first multicultural president (he lived in Indonesia with his mom and step-dad for four years, in addition to living in the United States for most of his life). And he is also the first president to have a name that originated in Africa.

Is the name Saeed a Muslim name?

Was the middle name 'Hussein' given to Barack Obama at birth?

Yes, Hussein is Barack Obama's middle name. It should be noted that this is a very common name in certain Muslim countries; while Americans associate it with the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, people in those countries do not think it is a negative name at all. Barack Obama's father was born in Kenya, to a Muslim family. But by the time his son was born, Barack Senior was a non-practicing Muslim who had left the faith and become an atheist. But he gave his son his own name, and President Obama has never changed it. It should also be noted that internet myths which claim the president is a Muslim are false. He was mainly raised by his maternal grandparents, who were Protestant Christians.
