The Bell housing on the engines are located in slightly different areas. Thus the Altenator was relocated. The Super Beatle Altenator is 3 bolt, and smaller. HOpe this helps.. Reximus Manning. There are two alternators for Volkswagen Beetles: the Bosch AL82X, and the Motorola abomination they threw on there for a while when Bosch couldn't make enough AL82X to meet VW's needs. They're the same size, so if you've got a 74 SB and a 73 alternator, go ahead and install it Since the sheetmetal is the same between the two, you're fine. (If you were moving an alternator from a 72 to a 74, you'd have to switch the backing plates because VW changed the fan shroud that year, and the backing plates are different.)
The biggest difference is the 74 has energy absorbing bumpers that the 73 is lacking.
take the pulley nut off the alternator....the pulley is split.....shims between the two pulley halves adjust the belt tension
between the rear wheels
Someone put one on it.
The fuel pump on a stock Type 1 Beetle is located on top of the engine case to the immediate left of the alternator.
1974 was the first year of energy absorbing Beetle bumpers. You can't use earlier bumpers on 1974s.

NO
Mine didn't have any.
There are two versions of the Super Beetle, one made in 1971 and 1972, the other in 1973, 1974 and 1975. All of them have a louvered front apron (the piece of sheetmetal below the trunk lid, behind the front bumper) and the spare tire lays flat in the trunk. All Standard Beetles had the front tire standing up in front of the gas tank. The 1973-75 Supers also have a curved windshield.
