Sand Casting-is a cast part produced by forming a mold with the help of a model or pattern pressed into a sand mixture and then removed. Die Casting- is the process of forcing molten metal under high pressure into mold cavities (which are machined into dies).
casting numbers are on the back of the block. there are numbers on the pad by the head on passenger side front that will reveal information too

Casting numbers on top of the bellhousing flange and the suffix number on the block deck in front of the passenger side head. The casting numbers will tell you which block casting you have. The suffix will tell you what HP rating it had, what it was likely installed in, and what transmission was mated to it.
most of them are behind the passenger head on the block near the bell housing.
This casting number was used for the Dodge 318 and 440 engines. The casting # very often has nothing to do with valve size (Especially with Mopar) Dodge very often had a truck load of castings show up and be machined and installed on engines intended for very different uses.
A81 should be January 8, '71,'81,'91.
The casting number is on the passenger side of the block.Right above the starter. You may have to remove the starter to see it.
That is the number of the block. It was used to build 302, 327, and 350 engines in 2 or 4 bolt main from 1969-1980. There is a machined pad on the passenger side of the block just in front of the cylinder head that should have a combination of letters and numbers that can provide information about the horsepower and application. Write down the numbers and look it up at this website: http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-code-stampings.php
Should be a little pad on the front of the motor - passenger side - by the timing chain cover or by the passenger head. Search for "big block Chevy casting codes".... should be able to find out all about it from there.
