the rotor should point just to the driver side of the front of the block while the engin is a top dead center, there will be a timing mark on the harmonic balancer for find this, then there is only one way for the distributor cap to go on, the front driver side is #1 cylinder
#1 will be the first hole past the cap's mounting screw on the left side of the distributor, going clockwise.

Align the rotor with the number one position on the distributor cap, then with the engine at TDC insert the distributor. There may be a mark on the outside of the distributor to help.

It is on the back of the intake manifold just in front of the distributor. If it is a HEI vehicle it will be in the center of the distributor cap. (distributor cap will look larger than normal)
When working on a car, and troubleshooting problems, knowing the firing order can come in handy. The firing order of the distributor cap of a Chevy 350 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
The cap doesn't spin at all. The rotor turns clockwise.
