replace entire ignition switch. refer to Mitchell Manuel for precise removal instructions and special tools needed. ++ ANSWER ++ Mine did that for about a month. I just kept turning 97 Blazer on and off till it released the key. Been about a year and it hasn't repeated. Sure was frustrating. At one point I was leaving the key in it (throw a towel over the column) and used a spare key to get in & out. That is what insurance is for right?!!
Your neutral safety switch-try putting car in neutral and trying it
Starter relay, neutral/park safety switch, ingition switch in the column, ignition fuse.
You do not ,you replace it .

Seized engine? Loose or corroded battery cables? Weak or dead battery? Bad starter solenoid? Bad starter? Bad clutch or neutral safety switch? Bad ignition switch?
They are dark purple. It goes from the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch to the starter.
There isn't a neutral safety switch but a clutch switch that is located under the dash on the clutch pedal.

Your 1996 Chevrolet Blazer may not start due to a faulty ignition switch. The electronic fuel pump may also be faulty and need to be changed.

Check your neutral safety switch on the transmission. It is either loose or out by a hair, that is why it work only some times.
