I've had the same problem. This is the second time it's happened to me. Last time? It was the central power supply (or a power supply of some sort, but I think it was "central power supply"). It's probably the same thing now.

There are quite a few of light bulbs on the instrument panel. You get to them from the back of the panel. Some instrument panels can be disconnected and pulled forward enough to get to the back, other panels have to be worked on "in place".

There is a 5 amp fuse in the upper right corner of the fuse panel by the drivers side left knee. I believe it is fuse #13. This fuse provides power to the dash instrument cluster.
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) is located under the right hand side of the instrument panel.
To replace a 1988 Dakota heater core, first discharge the A/C. Then remove the lower instrument panel before removing the heater box unit.
If your model has the digital heater/AC control panel, turn the ignition switch to "on" and then press the heater control panel's "off" and"warm" buttons at the same time for 5 seconds or so. The instrument panel will then display any codes.
