Some key events in the United States from 1797 to 1801 include the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798, which aimed to limit Immigration and restrict freedom of speech; the XYZ Affair in 1797, where French agents demanded a bribe from American diplomats; and the peaceful transfer of power from George Washington to John Adams after the 1796 presidential election.

Here are a few.

1783 -- Treaty of Paris is signed, officially ending the war.

1786 -- Annapolis Convention is called, and the result is a report calling for a second Constitutional Convention, drafted largely by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison.

Summer 1787 -- Constitutional Convention!

October 1787 - March 1788 -- Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison write the Federalist Papers.

1788 -- New Hampshire becomes the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, making it the supreme law of the land.

April 30, 1789 -- George Washington becomes president.

January 1790 -- Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton puts forth his Report on the Public Credit, advocating for assumption of state debts, leading to the "compromise of 1790"

December 1790 -- Hamilton writes his Report on the National Bank which ignites a ton of controversy.

1793 -- Washington becomes president, again.

1793 -- Increasing conflicts between Treasury Secretary Hamilton and State Secretary Thomas Jefferson lead to Jefferson's resignation from his cabinet post.

1794 -- The Jay Treaty makes its way to America and ignites a wave of controversy. "Damn John Jay" becomes a very popular phrase.

1795 -- Alexander Hamilton resigns as Treasury Secretary.

1796 -- First contested presidential election. With 3 more votes than Jefferson John Adams emerges victorious.

The Adams Presidency -- An undeclared naval war with France, the Quasi War, ignites more controversy.

1798 -- John Adams passes the Alien and Sedition Acts. The Sedition Act angers the most people as it is a violation of the First Amendment

1798/99 -- Jefferson and James Madison write the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions

1800 -- America's nastiest presidential election to date. Rumors abound the newspapers smearing scuttlebutt about the candidates, Alexander Hamilton sabotages John Adams for the third time in eleven years, and a botched vote in the electoral college leads to 36 rounds of voting until Jefferson ends up winning. Thus begins the nineteenth century.
